How to measure your head for a hat
- Use a soft tape measure. A piece of string and a ruler will do if you mark the string carefully.
- Place the tape round your head where a hat sits: just above your eyebrows and the tops of your ears, and round the fullest part of the back of your head.
- Keep the tape level all the way round and snug, not tight.
- Wear your hair the way you normally would under a hat. A thick ponytail or a close crop can change the reading.
- Read the measurement where the tape meets its start. With string, mark the point, lay it flat and measure it against the ruler.
- Measure two or three times and use the largest figure. Enter it in centimetres or inches.
Most adult heads fall between 52 and 64 cm. If you get a figure outside that range, the calculator will ask you to measure again.
How US, UK and EU hat sizes work
EU hat sizes are the simplest: the size is your head circumference in centimetres, so a 58 cm head wears an EU 58.
US fitted sizes come from the same measurement in inches, divided by π and rounded to the nearest eighth. In practice, that makes the US size roughly the width of the head. A 22-inch head works out at a US 7.
UK sizes use the same eighths but run one eighth smaller than US for the same head. A US 7¼ is a UK 7⅛, which catches people out when they order a hat from the other side of the Atlantic. If a label just says “7¼” with no country, ask the seller which system it uses.
Fedora sizes and letter sizes
Many fedoras, trilbies and caps are sold in letter sizes rather than fractions. On this chart, S covers 54–55 cm, M covers 56–57 cm, L covers 58–59 cm, XL covers 60–61 cm and XXL covers 62–63 cm. Letter sizes vary by maker, so treat these as typical values and check the maker’s own chart where it exists.
A felt or straw fedora has a fixed band, so it has little give. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one and add hat-sizing tape (a foam strip that sits behind the sweatband) to take up the gap. A hat that is too small cannot be made bigger in the same easy way.

FAQs
What is hat size 7¼ in centimetres?
A US 7¼ fits a head of about 58 cm, or roughly 22.8 inches. In UK sizing, the same head is a 7⅛.
Are UK and US hat sizes the same?
No. For the same head, the UK number is one eighth lower. A UK 7 fits the same head as a US 7⅛.
What size fedora do I need?
Measure your head in centimetres and match it to the maker’s chart. As a starting point, a 57 cm head is usually a medium and a 58 cm head a large.
What if I’m between two hat sizes?
Go up to the larger size and fit sizing tape inside the band. It is cheap, easy to remove and makes a loose hat sit securely.
How tight should a hat be?
Snug enough that it stays on when you turn your head or walk in a light breeze, but not so tight that it leaves a red line on your forehead. Our Journal guide on how a fedora should fit covers this in more detail.
Does this chart work for children’s hats?
The chart and calculator are built for adult heads, from 52 to 64 cm. Children’s hats are often sold by age, so use the maker’s chart for those.
If you are looking for a hat to try your size on, our fedora and caps list their sizes, and the full set of converters is in the size guide.
US fitted sizes are head circumference in inches divided by π, rounded to the nearest eighth. UK sizes run one eighth below US for the same head, and EU sizes are the circumference in centimetres. The letter sizes (XXS to XXXL) are typical values that vary by maker, not a standard.
