How to measure your foot for shoe size
Foot length in centimetres is the most reliable starting point, because it means the same in every country. You need paper, a pen, a ruler and a wall.
- Measure in the evening. Feet swell a little over the day, and shoes bought for morning feet can pinch later.
- Put on the socks you plan to wear with the shoes.
- Tape the paper to a hard floor with one short edge against the wall.
- Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall and your weight on both feet.
- Mark the tip of your longest toe. It is not always the big toe.
- Measure from the wall edge of the paper to the mark, in centimetres.
- Repeat with the other foot and use the larger number.
- In the converter, choose “foot length (cm)” and pick the nearest length. The chart runs from 22 to 29 cm for women and 24 to 33 cm for men, in half-centimetre steps.
If you are between two lengths, the converter’s own advice applies: choose the larger size for trainers (sneakers) and boots.
Why US, UK and EU shoe sizes don’t line up
The three systems start from different points and count in different steps, so the numbers rarely meet neatly. That is why the chart has sizes such as EU 42.5 and 44.5, and why an EU size sometimes jumps by a whole number between two US half sizes.
For men, a UK size is usually one below the US size: a US 10 is a UK 9. The rounding is not perfectly even, though. In this chart a US 6.5 and a US 7 both come out as a UK 6, because brands round the in-between sizes differently.
For women, the gap is bigger. This chart puts the UK size 2.5 below the US size, so a US 7 is a UK 4.5. Some brands use a gap of 2 instead, which means the same UK size can carry two different US labels depending on the maker. When a brand publishes its own chart, trust it over any general converter, including this one. Brands differ by up to half a size.
Converting men’s shoe sizes to women’s
In US sizing, a women’s size is about 1.5 larger than the men’s size for the same foot. A US men’s 8 is roughly a US women’s 9.5, and a US women’s 9 is roughly a men’s 7.5. The converter shows this as the “cross-gender” figure.
EU sizes and centimetres are the same for everyone, which makes them the easiest way to compare unisex trainers. A men’s US 8 and a women’s US 9.5 are both EU 41 in this chart.
In the UK, casual shoes of this kind are called trainers; in the US, sneakers. The sizing is the same.

FAQs
What is EU 43 in US shoe size?
For men, EU 43 is a US 9.5 and a UK 8.5, for a foot of about 27.5 cm. On the women’s chart, EU 43 is a US 11. Check which chart a brand is using before you order.
Is a UK shoe size the same as a US size?
No. UK sizes are smaller numbers for the same foot: about one size smaller for men, and 2 to 2.5 sizes smaller for women depending on the brand.
How do I convert women’s shoe size to men’s?
Take 1.5 off the US women’s size to get the approximate US men’s size. A women’s 10 comes out at about a men’s 8.5. Comparing EU sizes or foot length in centimetres avoids the maths altogether.
Should I size up or down if I’m between sizes?
Size up for trainers and boots, since a shoe that is slightly long is easier to fix with thicker socks or an insole than one that is short.
Does this converter cover children’s shoes?
No. The chart covers adult sizes only, from a women’s US 5 to a men’s US 15. Children’s sizes use separate scales.
Why does my size change between brands?
Each brand makes its shoes on its own lasts (foot-shaped forms) and rounds in-between sizes its own way, so half a size of difference is normal.
There is a longer step-by-step foot-measuring guide in the Luxeurs Journal, and every converter we offer is listed in the size guide. Once you know your size, our suede trainers and other shoes list sizes in US, UK and EU.
The chart follows the adult conversion that major sportswear brands publish, with US, UK, EU and foot length in centimetres. It is a common convention rather than a single international standard, and brands differ by up to half a size. The men’s-to-women’s figure adds 1.5 to the US men’s size, which is an approximation.
