Kids’ Shoe Size Chart: US, UK and EU Sizes With Foot Length

Children’s shoe sizes run in three stages. Toddler sizes go up to about US 10C (EU 27), little kid sizes from 10.5C to 3Y, and big kid sizes from 3.5Y to 7Y (EU 40). A US child size is usually half a size above the UK number, and UK sizes restart at 1 after 13.5. Measure your child’s foot in centimetres and match it to the chart.

A big kid’s Y size is about a women’s US size 1.5 higher (5Y ≈ women’s 6.5) and the same number in men’s (5Y ≈ men’s 5).
Brands disagree by up to a UK size and about 1 cm, so always check the brand’s own chart too.

How to measure your child’s foot

Stand your child on a sheet of paper with the heel against a wall, weight on both feet.
Mark the tip of the longest toe, which is not always the big toe.
Measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres. Do both feet and use the longer one.
Find the foot length in the chart. If it falls between two rows, choose the larger size.

Measure in the afternoon, when feet are largest, and again before every new pair: children’s feet grow quickly. More measuring tips are on How to measure yourself.

Why brands’ charts disagree

We compared the official children’s charts of Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Converse, Skechers, Clarks and Start-rite, reading the numbers from each brand’s own page in October 2026. Most agree on the US to EU steps, but three things vary:

US to UK. Most brands use UK = US minus half a size. Some use minus a whole size for part or all of their range, so the same shoe can be labelled UK 12 or UK 12.5.
Toddler EU sizes. For toddler sizes 7.5C to 10C, two brands put the EU size one lower (8C = EU 24 instead of EU 25).
Foot length. The length given for the same size differs by up to about 1.3 cm between brands. The chart shows the middle value, so treat it as a guide.

The table above is the consensus: for each size, the value most of the brands agree on.

From kids’ to adult sizes

Big kid sizes overlap adult sizes. A 5Y is about a women’s US 6.5 and a men’s US 5, which is why big kid trainers (sneakers) often fit teenagers and adults with small feet. Adult conversions are on the shoe size converter.

Questions

What does the C and Y mean in kids’ shoe sizes?

C stands for child (toddler and little kid sizes up to 13.5C) and Y for youth (big kid sizes from 1Y). After 13.5C the next size is 1Y.

What size is 1Y in UK?

About UK 13.5. The UK scale then restarts: 1.5Y is about UK 1.

What is the difference between toddler, little kid and big kid sizes?

They are stages of the same scale: toddler sizes run up to about 10C, little kid sizes from about 10.5C to 3Y, and big kid sizes from about 3.5Y to 7Y. Brands draw the lines in slightly different places.

How much room should a child’s shoe have?

Enough for the toes to move and a little growing room, without the heel slipping. If the foot length falls between two sizes, choose the larger, and check the fit again every few months.
